Bardiya National Park, established in 1988, is located in the western Terai region of Nepal and is the largest national park in the country, covering approximately 968 square kilometers. This park serves as a crucial sanctuary for a diverse array of wildlife, including endangered species such as the Bengal tiger, one-horned rhinoceros, and wild elephants. The park’s varied ecosystems—comprising dense forests, savannahs, and riverine woodlands—provide rich habitats for over 400 species of birds and numerous mammals. The Karnali River borders the western side of the park, while the Babai River flows through its center, enhancing biodiversity and offering unique opportunities for wildlife observation.
The history of Bardiya National Park dates back to the late 1960s, when it was initially designated as a royal hunting ground. It was officially declared a national park to protect its unique ecosystems and wildlife populations. The establishment of buffer zones around the park has been crucial in reducing human interference and poaching, allowing wildlife to thrive. Bardiya’s relatively remote location has kept it less commercialized compared to other national parks, such as Chitwan, providing visitors with a more authentic experience in nature, free from the distractions of urban life.
Visitors to Bardiya National Park can engage in various activities that showcase its natural beauty and wildlife. Guided jungle safaris—available on foot or by jeep—allow for close encounters with animals in their natural habitats. Canoeing on the rivers provides opportunities for birdwatching and spotting crocodiles, including the endangered gharial. Additionally, cultural interactions with local Tharu communities enrich the experience, offering insights into their traditional lifestyles and customs. Birdwatchers will find Bardiya particularly appealing due to its rich avian diversity, with over 400 species recorded in the area.
Bardiya National Park is not only significant for its wildlife conservation efforts but also plays a vital role in promoting eco-tourism in Nepal. The park’s management focuses on sustainable tourism practices that benefit local communities while preserving the environment. As awareness grows about the importance of wildlife conservation and eco-friendly tourism, Bardiya is poised to become one of Asia’s premier eco-tourism destinations, attracting nature lovers and adventure seekers from around the globe.
